If a dentist told you your wisdom teeth need to come out, or you're in pain and don't know if they're the reason, start here. At Christian Family Dentistry, Dr. Christian Nwokorie's oral-surgery residency training means wisdom teeth — even impacted ones — are handled in-house in Decatur, not referred out.
Same-day appointments for acute pain · Cone-beam CT scanning on site · Sedation options discussed at your consult
Partially erupted or fully impacted wisdom teeth sit close to nerves, sinuses, and the jawbone. Removing them safely isn't just about technique — it's about knowing what you're looking at on a 3D scan. Dr. Christian Nwokorie completed a residency in oral surgery, so impacted wisdom teeth, surgical extractions, and complex root anatomy are handled right here in Decatur instead of across the county.
Not all wisdom teeth need to come out, and not all that do look the same. Here are the cases that walk through our door most weeks.
Stuck below the gum or bone, usually angled into the neighboring molar. Almost always better out than in — and safer to remove sooner rather than later.
Half-through the gum, creating a flap of tissue that traps food and bacteria. A leading cause of wisdom-tooth infection and jaw pain in young adults.
Came in fully but pushing your other teeth or throwing off your bite. Often removed as part of orthodontic planning to protect straightening results.
Pain, swelling, or a bad taste coming from the back of your mouth. We can often see you the same day, manage the infection, and plan extraction.
Many cases are caught on routine x-rays before symptoms start. Removal in the late teens is often easier and heals faster than in your 30s or later.
Told you need all four out and not sure? We'll scan and give you a straight answer — including "leave them alone for now" if that's what your case calls for.
If any of these sound familiar, a consult is worth the visit. Even if extraction isn't urgent, a scan tells us whether waiting is safe or whether problems are building that you can't feel yet.
Most wisdom-teeth extractions at Christian Family Dentistry follow this five-step flow. If your case is more complex, we'll tell you before the procedure — no surprises.
Exam, symptom review, medication check. 20–30 minutes in our Decatur office.
Cone-beam CT shows roots, nerve position, and bone — before surgery, not during.
How many teeth, which anesthesia, how long, what it costs. You decide before we proceed.
Usually under an hour for all four. You go home with a driver the same day.
Aftercare instructions, a direct number, and a check-in visit to confirm clean healing.
Every patient is a little different, but this is the rhythm most people follow. We'll send you home with written instructions and the direct number to call if something looks off.
Rest, bite on gauze as directed, ice packs on cheeks, cold soft foods. No straws — sucking can dislodge the healing clot.
Swelling and discomfort peak around day 2. Keep taking prescribed medication, stay on soft foods, sleep with your head elevated.
Most patients return to work or school. Warm salt-water rinses replace ice. Start reintroducing soft solids.
Soft tissue typically heals within two weeks. Bone remodels over several months, but you're fully back to normal eating and activity.
Most wisdom-teeth complications aren't bad luck — they're small aftercare slip-ups. Four rules cover 90% of what keeps recovery on track.
If pain spikes several days out, you notice a foul taste, or bleeding restarts — call us first. Dry socket and minor complications are usually easy to fix when caught early.
(940) 304-0205 Emergency Dental CareCost depends on how many teeth, how they're positioned (erupted vs. impacted), and which anesthesia option you choose. Most dental insurance contributes meaningfully — we'll verify benefits before your procedure so you know your out-of-pocket number in advance.
Call the office — our team can share typical ranges based on whether your teeth are erupted or impacted, and book the scan-and-plan consult from there.
(940) 304-0205 Request a CallbackNot always. Fully erupted, healthy, cleanable wisdom teeth can sometimes stay. But impacted teeth, partially erupted teeth, and teeth causing crowding or infection almost always need to come out — and removing them earlier is usually easier than waiting. We'll tell you honestly after a scan.
Most cases — including all four wisdom teeth — finish in under an hour. Straightforward erupted teeth can be removed in 15–20 minutes; deeply impacted teeth take longer. You'll know before we start.
Not during — we use local anesthesia and can add nitrous oxide or oral sedation depending on your comfort level. Afterward, expect 2–3 days of manageable soreness that responds well to ice and prescribed medication.
Most patients are back to work or school within 3–5 days. Full soft-tissue healing takes about two weeks. Bone remodeling continues quietly for several months but doesn't affect normal activity.
Dry socket is when the healing clot dislodges, exposing bone. Skip straws, smoking, and vigorous rinsing for the first week and you avoid it in almost every case. If it happens, we treat it quickly and pain resolves within a day or two.
Removing impacted or crowding wisdom teeth usually protects the alignment of your other teeth rather than threatening it. We'll show you exactly what's touching what on your 3D scan.
Yes — and for most patients that's the smoother choice: one recovery, one round of soft foods, one week of ice packs. We'll confirm it's right for your specific case at the consult.
We can often place a bone graft at the time of extraction to preserve the site for a future implant. Learn more about our same-day dental implants →
Whether you're in pain now or just want to know what's going on before it starts, a consult and a cone-beam scan answer both. Book one and we'll walk you through it.
