Why Training Matters for Wisdom Teeth

Most Wisdom-Teeth Cases Get Referred to a Specialist. Ours Don't.

Partially erupted or fully impacted wisdom teeth sit close to nerves, sinuses, and the jawbone. Removing them safely isn't just about technique — it's about knowing what you're looking at on a 3D scan. Dr. Christian Nwokorie completed a residency in oral surgery, so impacted wisdom teeth, surgical extractions, and complex root anatomy are handled right here in Decatur instead of across the county.

  • Oral-surgery residency training
  • In-house cone-beam CT for nerve and root mapping
  • Surgical extractions performed in the operatory
  • Sedation options reviewed before your procedure
  • Direct post-op access to our team if something feels off

Every Wisdom-Teeth Case Is a Little Different

The Six Situations We See Most Often

Not all wisdom teeth need to come out, and not all that do look the same. Here are the cases that walk through our door most weeks.

Most Common

Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Stuck below the gum or bone, usually angled into the neighboring molar. Almost always better out than in — and safer to remove sooner rather than later.

Partially Erupted

Half-through the gum, creating a flap of tissue that traps food and bacteria. A leading cause of wisdom-tooth infection and jaw pain in young adults.

Fully Erupted but Crowding

Came in fully but pushing your other teeth or throwing off your bite. Often removed as part of orthodontic planning to protect straightening results.

Infected or Abscessed

Pain, swelling, or a bad taste coming from the back of your mouth. We can often see you the same day, manage the infection, and plan extraction.

Teen & Young-Adult Preventive Removal

Many cases are caught on routine x-rays before symptoms start. Removal in the late teens is often easier and heals faster than in your 30s or later.

Second-Opinion Evaluations

Told you need all four out and not sure? We'll scan and give you a straight answer — including "leave them alone for now" if that's what your case calls for.

Do You Actually Need Them Out?

Signs Your Wisdom Teeth Are the Problem

If any of these sound familiar, a consult is worth the visit. Even if extraction isn't urgent, a scan tells us whether waiting is safe or whether problems are building that you can't feel yet.

  • Pain or pressure at the back of your jaw
  • Swollen, red, or bleeding gums around your back molars
  • Bad taste, bad breath, or pus from the back of the mouth
  • Difficulty fully opening your mouth
  • Headaches or jaw aches that track to the back corners
  • Crowding in your front teeth that wasn't there before
  • A dentist or orthodontist told you they need to come out

What the Visit Actually Looks Like

From Consult to Going Home, Step by Step

Most wisdom-teeth extractions at Christian Family Dentistry follow this five-step flow. If your case is more complex, we'll tell you before the procedure — no surprises.

1

Consultation

Exam, symptom review, medication check. 20–30 minutes in our Decatur office.

2

3D Imaging

Cone-beam CT shows roots, nerve position, and bone — before surgery, not during.

3

Treatment Plan

How many teeth, which anesthesia, how long, what it costs. You decide before we proceed.

4

Extraction Day

Usually under an hour for all four. You go home with a driver the same day.

5

Follow-Up

Aftercare instructions, a direct number, and a check-in visit to confirm clean healing.

Recovery

What the Days After Wisdom-Teeth Removal Feel Like

Every patient is a little different, but this is the rhythm most people follow. We'll send you home with written instructions and the direct number to call if something looks off.

Day 0

The day of surgery

Rest, bite on gauze as directed, ice packs on cheeks, cold soft foods. No straws — sucking can dislodge the healing clot.

Days 1–3

Peak swelling

Swelling and discomfort peak around day 2. Keep taking prescribed medication, stay on soft foods, sleep with your head elevated.

Days 4–7

Back to routine

Most patients return to work or school. Warm salt-water rinses replace ice. Start reintroducing soft solids.

2+ Weeks

Fully healed

Soft tissue typically heals within two weeks. Bone remodels over several months, but you're fully back to normal eating and activity.

Aftercare Essentials

Simple Rules That Make Recovery Go Smoothly

Most wisdom-teeth complications aren't bad luck — they're small aftercare slip-ups. Four rules cover 90% of what keeps recovery on track.

  • No straws for 5–7 days. Suction can pull the healing clot loose (dry socket).
  • No smoking or vaping for at least a week. Same reason — plus it slows healing.
  • Cold and soft for the first few days. Ice cream, yogurt, smoothies with a spoon, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes.
  • Rinse with warm salt water starting day 2. Gentle rinses, not vigorous swishing.

Something doesn't feel right?

If pain spikes several days out, you notice a foul taste, or bleeding restarts — call us first. Dry socket and minor complications are usually easy to fix when caught early.

Wisdom Teeth FAQ

Questions We Get at Every Consult

Do I really need my wisdom teeth out?

Not always. Fully erupted, healthy, cleanable wisdom teeth can sometimes stay. But impacted teeth, partially erupted teeth, and teeth causing crowding or infection almost always need to come out — and removing them earlier is usually easier than waiting. We'll tell you honestly after a scan.

How long does the procedure take?

Most cases — including all four wisdom teeth — finish in under an hour. Straightforward erupted teeth can be removed in 15–20 minutes; deeply impacted teeth take longer. You'll know before we start.

Will it hurt?

Not during — we use local anesthesia and can add nitrous oxide or oral sedation depending on your comfort level. Afterward, expect 2–3 days of manageable soreness that responds well to ice and prescribed medication.

How long is the recovery?

Most patients are back to work or school within 3–5 days. Full soft-tissue healing takes about two weeks. Bone remodeling continues quietly for several months but doesn't affect normal activity.

What's dry socket and how do I avoid it?

Dry socket is when the healing clot dislodges, exposing bone. Skip straws, smoking, and vigorous rinsing for the first week and you avoid it in almost every case. If it happens, we treat it quickly and pain resolves within a day or two.

Will my other teeth shift after the extraction?

Removing impacted or crowding wisdom teeth usually protects the alignment of your other teeth rather than threatening it. We'll show you exactly what's touching what on your 3D scan.

Can I get all four out in one visit?

Yes — and for most patients that's the smoother choice: one recovery, one round of soft foods, one week of ice packs. We'll confirm it's right for your specific case at the consult.

What if I need an implant after an extraction?

We can often place a bone graft at the time of extraction to preserve the site for a future implant. Learn more about our same-day dental implants →
